It makes sense that if we are going to become more human(e) as a society, than writing will necessarily be a large part of that process.Abdel Shakurhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04245104256959807029noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8164220375200882525.post-33310153070541657542011-01-18T17:56:12.880-06:002011-01-18T17:56:12.880-06:00Awesome post!

Have you seen this brand-new report on the lack of college student learning, though? Here's an excerpt:

[The researchers] spread the blame, pointing to students who don't study much and seek easy courses and a culture at colleges and universities that values research over good teaching.

... The findings are troubling news for an engaged citizenry, Arum said. Almost half of those [students] surveyed said they rarely if ever discuss politics or public affairs with others either in person or online.

It is encouraging, though, that their findings point out the need for students to write more in college. More than anything, I think, writing makes students, as you say, more thoughtful and allows them to actively engage in a discourse community. And, yes, I also think that writing has the potential to produce a more moral citizenry.

Call me idealistic. :)Jackson Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18141532542386300417noreply@blogger.com
